This just in.  We have received unconfirmed reports of a major incident.  The exact nature of the incident is as yet unverified, but early reports indicate that it is a very important event, with serious implications for everyone concerned.

Let’s go to our crisis reporter, Joan Smith, for the latest update.

Hi, Sam.  This is Joan Smith, reporting to you live from the news network crisis center.  We are working feverishly to bring our viewers details on this late breaking news.  Local officials have so far refused to confirm or deny that anything major has occurred, but clearly, something is going on.  We don’t know exactly what, just yet, but it must be serious, because the government is remaining silent about what has happened.

Well, Joan, exactly what has happened?

Well, that’s just it, Sam, we don’t know.

Well then, describe what you do know.

We don’t know anything.

Nothing?

No, Sam, government officials have refused to ---

Then Joan, how do we know that anything has happened?

We don’t, Sam.  Wait.  Here is a live feed from the news conference being held.  Let’s see what this can tell us.

Reporters clamoring and shouting questions.  Then one voice is heard.  “Why are you refusing to give us details?”

“I can’t answer that question.”

“Why not?”

“I can’t tell you why not.”

“Why?”

“Because, this may be part of an ongoing investigation, and I am not authorized to discuss matters about which I know nothing.”

“Can you at least tell us if there is a crisis?”
“Well, there must be one, because I keep hearing about it.”

“And from whom are you hearing about it?”

“From you.”

Well, there you have it Sam, the government is not telling us anything.

Joan, I’m looking at the live feed right now, and that man is not from the government.  He is a hardware store clerk.

“Oh.  Okay, never mind.”
